Recent studies estimate that 25 million individuals provide care to another family member. These family caregivers provide two-thirds of all home care services in the country-a market value of about $190 billion a year;
Most family caregivers act alone: 65% of these caregivers don't receive help from family members and friends; 69% say frustration is their most frequently felt emotion;
Caregiving is largely a women's issue. Some 72% of caregivers are female, mostly wives and adult daughters;
Care giving can last from less than a year to over forty years;
80% of caregivers provide unpaid assistance seven days a week, with II % providing round the clock care;
75% of all caregivers help with grocery shopping, transportation and housework, and about 66% prepare meals or manage finances, while one half administer medications;
Because, caregiving can be such an emotionally draining experience, caregivers feel depression three times the rate of others in their own age group and they are more likely to become physically ill.
Caregivers often indicate they are not certain that they will "out survive" the people for whom they are caring; thus, there are often two "at risk" persons: the individual being cared for and the caregiver.
